Manchester City are reportedly looking to take advantage of Marc Guehi’s contract situation to sign the Crystal Palace centre-back next summer. Guehi’s future has been the subject of much speculation over the summer, with Newcastle United reportedly making at least four offers for his services.
The Magpies’ biggest offer was thought to be in the region of £60 million plus £5 million add-ons, but that was not enough to convince Palace to let him go. The 24-year-old is in the final two years of his contract at Selhurst Park, and according to the Daily Mail , the England international is not keen on signing a new contract with the London club.
Man City are reportedly monitoring the situation closely and could make a move for him next summer, when Palace will be under more pressure to sell. Man City ‘identify’ Guehi as a target for centre-back
The report claims the Citizens could even wait until the summer of 2026 and sign Guehi on a free transfer, if Palace fail to convince him to sign a new deal. Newcastle are said to be considering renewing their interest in the Englishman next year, while Manchester United are also said to be admirers. Guehi joined Palace from Chelsea in 2021, and he has represented the Eagles on 115 occasions in all competitions, including 101 appearances in the Premier League. Harry Maguire’s injury opened the door for Guehi to start for England at Euro 2024, and he has proven to be one of his country’s most impressive players at the European Championship.
Palace chairman claims club wanted ‘superstar money’ for Guehi Palace co-owner and chairman Steve Parish said in the summer that Guehi would only be allowed to leave Selhurst Park for “superstar money”.
“We’d like to keep him. There’s a price and a situation where we could consider it,” Parish told BBC Sport . “Somebody [in another interview] said he’s a superstar, so somebody’s got to pay superstar money.
“Realistically, a 24-year-old homegrown player, a sensational talent, somebody’s got to make it
difficult for us. At the moment, that’s not the case. He’ll still be at Crystal Palace for the time being, but it’s
not impossible. “He certainly doesn’t make life difficult for anyone, his agents are good people. It’s a very
good situation. Whether he’s there or not won’t change his performance.” Newcastle failed to come up with a suitable offer in the summer, but if Guehi doesn’t sign a new contract at Selhurst Park, it will be much harder for the club to turn down that kind of money in 2025
